PT Graphic Designer

Department: Media Services
Location: Des Plaines, IL

Expected Starting Rate - $25/hr +/- dependent on qualifications

Position Summary

Under direction, the Part-Time Graphic Designer uses creativity and design skills to support the City’s communication goals through print and digital media. The position creates original graphic content, including the annual budget book, that helps tell the City’s story, promote programs and services, and engage residents across a range of communication channels.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Uses multiple desktop publishing programs and systems to create, design, and edit flyers, newsletters, brochures, charts, annual reports, and other marketing materials.
  • Collaborates with the team to write a variety of content, including press releases, public service announcements, newsletters, brochures, annual reports, and other educational and promotional materials.
  • Maintains visual brand consistency across publications and social media platforms.
  • Coordinates with City staff to ensure timely production of materials.
  • Edits photos and graphics for City communications.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two years of experience in graphic design with a portfolio.
  • Possess or be in the process of obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Media Production, Graphic Design, Marketing, Public Relations, or a related degree or equivalent experience.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Principles of graphic design and visual communication
  • Adobe Creative Cloud, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign
  • Print-ready production and file preparation
  • AP-style writing and proofreading
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff
  • Knowledge of marketing, photography, and social media

Special Requirements/Qualifications

  • State of Illinois Class “D” Driver’s License with a clean driving record or ability to obtain one

Equipment Used

  • Requires the frequent use of computers, software programs, electronic devices to communicate, phones, an automobile, and various office equipment.

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand and walk; use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Specific hearing abilities required by this job include the ability to hear in large rooms during presentations.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in a variety of settings, including public events, public facilities, parks, schools, public streets and rights-of-way, commercial buildings, and office settings.
